TankCompass is an independent app. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by any government entity, ministry or public authority. All fuel-price data is obtained from the official public open-data sources listed under "Third-party services" below.

Location

The app uses your device's location, on-device only, to sort and filter nearby fuel stations. Location is never sent to or stored on any server.

Third-party services

Station and price data comes from official government open-data sources. For Spain: the Geoportal Gasolineras (https://geoportalgasolineras.es/geoportal-instalaciones/Inicio) and its open fuel-price web service (https://sedeaplicaciones.minetur.gob.es/ServiciosRESTCarburantes/PreciosCarburantes/help), run by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO). For Italy: the Osservaprezzi Carburanti open-data catalogue (https://www.mimit.gov.it/it/open-data/elenco-dataset/carburanti-prezzi-praticati-e-anagrafica-degli-impianti), published by the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (MIMIT). For the United Kingdom: the Fuel Finder open-data scheme (https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/fuel-finder), run by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). For Denmark: each fuel retailer's own public price API (the OK, Circle K / INGO, Q8 / F24 and Shell chains), required under Danish law by the Konkurrence- og Forbrugerstyrelsen, the Danish Competition and Consumer Authority (https://kfst.dk/vejledninger/kfst/dansk/2025/20251216-vejledning-om-api-til-offentliggoerelse-af-prisoplysninger-for-motorbraendstof); two of those chains don't publish coordinates, so those stations' street addresses are sent to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim geocoding service (https://operations.osmfoundation.org/policies/nominatim/) to place them on the map. For France: the official "prix-carburants" open-data scheme (https://data.economie.gouv.fr/explore/dataset/prix-des-carburants-en-france-flux-instantane-v2/), mandatory since 2006, run by the French government — note that France's official data doesn't include a station's brand name, so French stations are shown by their street address instead. TankCompass is an independent app and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting on behalf of any government entity — Spanish, Italian, British, Danish, French, or otherwise. Tapping "Get Directions" opens the navigation app you choose (Google Maps, Apple Maps, TomTom or Waze) — that app's own privacy policy applies from that point on. The app uses Google's Firebase service as its notification infrastructure (anonymous sign-in, push notification delivery and, if you use price alerts, the server-side alert check) — see "Notifications and Price Drop Alerts" below for exactly what is sent and stored.

What's stored on your device

Your fuel type and favorite navigation app are stored locally on your device. Your favorite navigation app is never sent to a server, and your fuel type is only sent as part of a price alert you turn on. Your favorite stations and price alert preferences are also stored locally first — see "Notifications and Price Drop Alerts" below for what's sent.

Notifications and Price Drop Alerts

Every time the app starts, it registers an anonymous identifier with Google's Firebase service (no name, no account) and gets a notification address for your device (an FCM token). It sends that token, your app's display language and your list of price alerts to our server to keep that list in sync. Each of those requests also carries an anti-abuse check from Google (Firebase App Check), which confirms the request came from a genuine TankCompass install on a real device; it identifies the app, not you. If you haven't turned on any price alert, the list is empty and nothing more is stored about you than that anonymous identifier held by Firebase, plus standard technical server logs (which can include your IP address and a shortened anonymous id) that Google Cloud keeps for up to 30 days.

Price alerts themselves are optional. When you favorite a station and turn on its price alert, that station's id, the fuel type you're watching, your target price (if you set one), your app's display language (so the notification can be sent in that language) and your device's notification address (an FCM token) are stored on our server — tied to an anonymous per-install device id, never your name or an account. This data is only used to detect the price drop you asked about and notify you about it; it's never used for anything else or shared with third parties. Unfavoriting the station or turning its alert off deletes the matching record on the server, and an alert record that stops being refreshed — because you deleted the app or haven't opened it for 90 days — is deleted automatically after 90 days. A history of the price-drop notifications actually sent to your device (station, price change and date) is also kept on our server for up to 90 days so you can view it in-app under Notification History — like everything else here, it's tied only to your anonymous device id.

Ads

The app shows ads via Google AdMob: native ads in the station list and favorites screens, and a banner ad on the Map tab. Users in the European Economic Area are asked for explicit consent via Google's own UMP (User Messaging Platform) form before any ad is shown; your choice determines whether ads use personalized or non-personalized data. The ad provider (Google) may process information such as device identifiers as part of this, under its own privacy policy — TankCompass doesn't access or store this data on its own server. You can change your consent at any time from Settings → Ad Preferences.

No accounts

The app doesn't require an account and doesn't build a user profile.
